Nowadays many parents believe that children’s usage of tablets or computers would be good for their academic career. What are the advantages and disadvantages of such belief?
It is true that technological devices such as tablets or computers have become popular in our life, particularly in the educational field. However, the using of such gadgets has its benefits and drawbacks, and these will be discussed in this essay.
On the one hand, using tablets and computers could bring many benefits to children in learning. Firstly, such modern devices are information-gathering tools, which could facilitate children’s knowledge acquisition and skills development. Nowadays, by using a tablet with access to the Internet, young learners could easily get different educational resources, ranging from basic subjects to scientific inventions, and no longer have to go to the library. Secondly, computers could provide useful programs that play an indispensable part in some fields, such as engineering or architecture, particularly in the aspects of design and calculations. Without software applications such as Autocad or Excel, it is impossible for students to design complex houses or handle large amounts of data.
On the other hand, the increasing use of technological devices in the educational environment also has drawbacks. Perhaps the biggest disadvantage is that they could affect academic performance if students use them without positive purposes. For example, instead of taking distance-learning courses, youngsters may devote most of their time to play computer games or watch game shows and these temptations are often difficult to resist. Another disadvantage is that using high-tech gadgets has the potential for impairing students’ writing skills. As students student spend more time typing message or composing text documents, they will have less time for writing activities. Particularly, some computer software programs have functions that help correct mistakes automatically and this will lead to poor writing competence in the long term.
In conclusion, computers and tablets are useful gadgets, but there are several advantages and disadvantages of introducing them in education.
