In many countries, the proportion of old people is steadily increasing. Does this trend have more positive or negative effects on society?
It is true that nowadays people seem to live longer and the populations of some nations grow older. While an aging population generally sounds like a positive trend, I am of opinion that it has a largely negative impact on society.
On the one hand, there are several reasons why it can be argued that senior citizens also make a significant contribution to our society. Perhaps the principal reason is that people of retirement age have a great deal of spare time, allowing them to help their family members and other people. For instance, they could assist working parents in taking care of children or they could do voluntary work such as teaching or helping disabled people in hospitals. The other reason is that those who reached their twilight years typically gained considerable specialised knowledge and practical experience accumulated through years of working, all of which could be effectively utilized in certain key areas. This is particularly the case in medical care sector where retired professional doctors have been recruited again to be medical consultants working in private healthcare system such as Hoan My hospital.
On the other hand, however, we should not underestimate negative consequences that an age population causes. Firstly, there is likely to have an imbalance in the workforce due to the lack of young labor and this will greatly affect the economic and social well-being of countries in the long run. As a result, the government has to take less-than-desirable measures such as depending on immigration or encouraging people to have more children in the hope of filling this gap. Secondly, it is a society with an aging population that will put huge pressure on government budgets. Indeed, an increasing number of old people also means greater amounts of pension, medical care cost needed and there would be fewer funds spent on other pressing issues such as education or housing shortages.
In conclusion, although I acknowledge that we can reap some benefits from an aging society, I would contend that this tendency would have many detrimental effects and the government should take feasible actions to tackle this demographic problem

Đúng là hiện nay con người dường như sống lâu hơn và dân số các nước trở nên già hơn. Mặc dù dân số già nói chung nghe có vẻ là một xu hướng tích cực, tôi cho rằng nó có một tác động tiêu cực lớn đến xã hội.
Một mặt, có nhiều lý do tại sao cho rằng những công dân lớn tuổi cũng có thể đóng góp lớn vào xã hội của chúng ta. Lý do thứ nhất đó là những người tuổi về hưu rõ ràng có một lượng thời gian rảnh lớn cho phép họ giúp đỡ người thân trong gia đình và những người khác. Chẳng hạn, họ có thể phụ giúp các đôi vợ chồng đang đi làm trong việc chăm sóc những đứa trẻ hoặc làm những công việc tình nguyện như dạy học hay chăm sóc các trẻ em khuyết tật ở các bệnh viện. Lý do thứ hai đó là những người về hưu tích lũy một lượng lớn kiến thức chuyên ngành và các kinh nghiệm thực tế được tích lũy qua các năm làm việc, mà có thể được tận dụng hiệu quả trong một số lĩnh vực chính. Đây đặc biệt là trường hợp ở lĩnh vực chăm sóc sức khỏe nơi mà các bác sĩ chuyên ngành đã về hưu được tuyển dụng một lần nữa để trở thành những người tư vấn sức khỏe làm việc trong các trung tâm y tế tư nhân như bệnh viện Hoàn Mỹ.
Tuy nhiên, mặt khác, một xã hội mà dân số già gây ra nhiều hậu quả tiêu cực.
