Mobile phones and the Internet are very useful for old people. However, this section of population is the fewer users of mobile phones and the Internet. In what ways can mobile phones and the Internet be useful to the old people? How can the old people be encouraged to use this new technology?

It is true that although advanced communication devices and the Internet became more popular, the number of old people using them remains relatively low. I believe that this development has many advantages to the elderly and several measures can be taken to make modern technologies more accessible to them.
It seems to me that applications of mobile phones and the Internet in health management and communication are most helpful to the older generation. In terms of health care, nowadays there are several mobile software applications, allowing people to check their health, ranging from measuring blood pressure to calculating heart rate. Consequently, they could send those results to doctors and are immediately diagnosed without going to the hospital. In terms of interpersonal communication, by making video calls via social networking sites such as Facebook or Twitter, old people could easily see their family members and relatives from faraway destinations. Particularly, for those who have difficulty in traveling a long distance, this is beyond any price.
In my opinion, there are several ways to help older adults take advantage of these technological advancements. Firstly, a simple solution would be to provide the elderly with guidance and knowledge of using high-tech gadgets so that they could deal with technological issues by themselves. For example, we could encourage children to teach their grandparents to use smartphones or offer free classes on computer basics to seniors. Secondly, it is advisable for companies to develop devices and websites specifically designed for older users. Since most seniors suffer from age-related diseases, it is difficult for them to use without making the screen larger, text bigger and sound louder.
In conclusion, I am of the opinion that old people could reap many benefits from using mobile phones and accessing to online websites, and steps can be taken to help seniors to keep up with the younger generation.
