There are several reasons why international sporting events play a pivotal role in relieving constant global tensions. Perhaps the principal reason is that sport is enjoyed by all people, regardless of age, gender or ethnicity, and such sporting events help bring everyone together, making them forget about the conflicts, at least temporarily. History shows that Greeks and Romans used to stop battles to compete peacefully in Olympic Games, or footballers from Palestine and Israel forgot their differences joining the match and even embraced each other after the event. Furthermore, this is also the opportunity for people to understand cultural, social, and religious differences between nations, which are often the main factors leading to conflicts and disputes. Thanks to removing those barriers, sport can pave the way to world peace and unity.

It seems to me that global sporting events also provide chances for people to show patriotism in a proper manner. It often appears that in order to support athletes who are represented for their countries, most spectators behave politely in variety ways. For example, sports fans often wear clothes with national colors, hold flags, sing the national anthem or cheer soccer players in international football matches. Besides, after events, achievements that athletes attain in competitions bring honor, prestige, and pride to a country, and for many people, this is beyond any price. They usually show nationalistic attitude by celebrating parties and posting pictures on social networking sites. Obviously, such behaviors are much safer than fighting a war.

In conclusion, I would argue that popular sports occasions are paramount importance to relieving tensions on a global basis and expressing nationalistic attitude in a proper way.
